C1850 ENGLISH (HINGED & KEYED) INLAID TORTOISE SHELL, MOTHER OF PEARL, SILVER SEWING BOX

mid-19th century: box of rectangular form with canted corners, interior with multi-silk lined compartments, raised on spherical carved feet.

The box is of tortoise shell with inlaid mother-of-pearl floral decorations of flowers in midst bloom throughout on the front and top.

FWIW: The interior is red/purple silk lined boasting a removable tray. Housing period 19th century silver, bone, and glass accouterments to the inside: silver thimble, tools, glass bottle, tape measure, etc…

PROVENANCE: Collection of Jennifer Burrows Swan, Sacramento, California.

Size: 9 x 5 x 5 inches overall.

Condition report: Very good to good. Some mother of pearl loss, crazing throughout, silk fraying and discoloration, moderate silver tarnish: all commensurate with age, shelf wear and use.
