Fine & Rare: Double sided Porcelain humpback sign for the corner of E. 127 ST. & MADISON AVE. New York City, N.Y.

Crafted and decorated with a with rich cobalt blue enamel ground with white enamel/porcelain lettering on metal, U.S.A., ca. 1920

Lot Note(s): Comes with its original heavy black enameled iron metal bracket. (With rectangular and oval shaped open cartouche).

FWIW: Flange is original and period as well ca. 1920

Condition report:
Some loss to enamel lettering and ground; dirt, grime, and discoloration. Otherwise excellent. Extremely rare (un-restored) original frame & bracket.

**************A LITTLE HISTORY**************

In old New York City, particularly in Manhattan and the Bronx, "humpback signs" were dark blue street signs with white text, where the "hump" indicated the cross street. These signs, used from the 1910s to the 1960s, featured the main street name on the larger portion and the cross street name on the smaller hump.
